Weight Loss Surgery: What You Need To Know

Weight loss surgery can work well to help some people to lose weight. However, it may not be suitable or the right decision for everyone who wants to lose weight. Weight loss surgery is not something to be undertaken without very careful consideration. You need to be fully prepared for weight loss surgery and you need to be highly motivated. When considering surgery you must have a full understanding of what it involves, including the risks and benefits. You should also be aware of the fact that you need to make long-term changes to your lifestyle and eating habits after your surgery. Now, let’s check some of the common weight loss surgical procedures as under:

Weight Loss Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is among the common weight loss procedures carried out for surgeons for obese people. In this surgery, a small size pouch over the stomach is created by the surgeon. This pouch is that part of the stomach, which receives food. This can further limit the amount of food intake in your body at one time. The surgeon then cuts the small intestine at a small distance just below the main stomach and then connected to a new pouch. This leads the food flow directly from this pouch over the portion of the cut made over the intestine. However, the main portion of the stomach keeps on producing digestive juices. The intestine’s portion is simply attached over the main stomach, which is further reattached farther down. With this the digestive juice is flown over the small intestine. As the food is seen getting bypassed to a portion of small intestine, you can find small amounts of calories and nutrients being absorbed.

Weight Loss Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

In this surgery, a big chunk of your stomach is seen getting removed, which leaves behind a small stomach sleeve, which is like a narrow tube. This is further connected to the patient’s oesophagus above along with the intestine below of the first part. Hence once again, the size of the patient’s stomach is seen becoming smaller. This means the food intake you have would reduce. This will keep your stomach full for a longer amount of time once you have food. This surgery can be even carried out using the keyhole technique. This surgery is simpler for the surgeons to operate than any other procedures of weight loss. However, it is reported to be less effective than the other procedures in terms of weight loss one enjoys with the other options. Hence it is considered for people who have lesser obesity and who has fewer health issues.

Weight Loss Gastric Banding Surgery

This procedure works on the idea of using adjustable laparoscopic gastric banding procedure, which is a band that carries an inflatable balloon that is placed over the upper part of the stomach and the ones that are fixed over the place. This simply creates a small kind of stomach pouch just above the band that contains an inflatable balloon that is put across the upper stomach part and then fixed in this place. This further simply creates a small amount of small stomach pouch over the band that carries a very small and narrow kind of opening over remaining portion of the stomach.  The surgeon then places a port under the abdomen’s skin tissues and then connects the same to a band. This makes a balloon, which can be adjusted by deflating or inflating it in order to get adjusted to the right band’s size. With this the amount of food entering your stomach is adjusted, however, the absorption of nutrients and calories are not restricted.

Conclusion

One of the best ways to reduce weight is to opt for any of the above three surgical options. However, these are often called as the last resort when any morbidly obese person has tried all the non surgical options to lose weight.
