Man loses 130 kg after surgery at AIIMS

NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old engineering student who underwent a weight loss surgery in May 2017 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here has lost over 130 kg over a period of two years, doctors said.
Ravi Khatri (name changed), a resident of Lajpat Nagar, had approached doctors when he weighed 250 kg, they said.
He was highly obese and his movement was restricted. He also suffered from depression because of his physique and wanted to lose weight desperately, Dr Sandeep Aggarwal, in-charge of bariatric surgery at AIIMS, said.
“We put him on diet and asked him to reduce 10 kg so we operate upon him, but he could not make it. He was then admitted to the hospital for two weeks during which we made him shed around 10 kg of weight,” Dr Aggarwal said.
Doctors performed sleeve gastrectomy, a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the size of his stomach was reduced to 100 ml by stapling out large proportion of it. It gave the stomach a sleeve like structure.
“Reducing the stomach size automatically reduces intake of food. Also the procedure leads to hormonal changes because of which absorption of food in the blood also gets reduced and that helps with weight loss,” he said.
He was then in the hospital for a week or two before being discharged. He was put on a low-calorie and high protein diet and asked to follow a healthy lifestyle including some exercise.
“He would come for a follow-up after every three months and lost 130 kg over a period of two years,” Dr Aggarwal said.
Like Khatri, 61-year-old Rajpal Solanki, a Gurgaon resident, lost around 72 kg after he underwent a mini-gastric bypass in August 2016.
Solanki weighed 133 kg before the procedure.
According to Dr Aggarwal, bariatric surgery is as safe as gall bladder operation but requires life-long care. One has to maintain a healthy lifestyle and proper diet after the surgery to maintain the weight.
“Bariatric surgery also helps patients suffering from diabetes and fatty liver and many people are not aware of this. This kind of surgery is also beneficial in advanced liver diseases,” Dr Aggarwal explained. PTI

Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery in India Gave Tapti Bhowmik Life Back

While Tapti Bhowmik being a housewife loves cooking, but lately she found herself fighting nausea and fending off abdominal cramps more and more often. But ever the optimist, Tapti concluded that stomachaches and indigestion were nothing more than a natural stop on the road to growing older. During one long, painful night she realized something more serious was going on. After feeling mainly nauseous all day lengthy, she went to bed early and awoke in the wee hours with excruciating ache.

Almost as soon as her feet touched the hospital, Tapti was in her doctor’s office — but not for her abdominal pain. She was undergoing a routine CT test to monitor another condition when the radiologist caught a glimpse of her gall bladder. In Kolkata, Sanjoy Mandal, senior GI, laparoscopic and onco surgeon, determined to conduct a CT scan and found that the gall bladder had expand a whole lot beyond normal size to nearly 12 inches, in preference to the natural length  of 3 -5 inches.

The gallbladder is a small organ that is located underneath the liver. It stores bile and releases it into the small intestine all through digestion. In adults, the gallbladder measures approximately 7 to10 centimeters (2.8 to 3.9 inches) in length and 4 centimeters (1.6 in) in diameter when fully distended.

The surgery was done through laparoscopic procedure. Tapti Bhowmik was suffering from an acute stomach ache on the right side of her upper abdomen region. After conducting an ultrasonagraphy on women, the surgeons at AMRI Hospital came across a sizeable obstruction in her gallbladder. However the 11.6 inch gall bladder is a few inches away from beating the world record. The longest gall bladder is a few inches short of beating the world record. The longest gall bladder was measured 11.8 inches and found in Suma Rao 46, women from Churu, Rajasthan in August, 2016. Doctors at Jaipur Sawai Singh Hospital had removed the gall bladder, which was acknowledged by Guinness Book as the longest gallbladder.

Sanjay Mandal, senior GI, laparoscopic and onco surgeon in Kolkata who conducted the surgery says “Though laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in India are common but Tapti Bhowmik case was a very serious case since bile duct was under pressure caused due to stones which was causing discomfort and further complications due to her complicated medical conditions, she was facing like COPD, hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus,” Mandal said.

I performed hundreds of laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in India every year. My patients always ask me if this is taken into consideration major surgery. I tell them that whenever they’re on the sharp end of the scalpel, its major surgery. On the day after her laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, Tapti Bhowmik was released from the hospital at noon and was already walking her dogs later that afternoon. She was able to return to her home immediately, and was also able to resume her regular, healthy diet.

“Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in India was easier than some root canals I’ve had,” Bhowmik says. I can work in my yard for six or seven hours, I can do more than people half my age.” Based on her experience, she often expresses the importance of listening to your body. I urge anyone with severe pain to seek immediate care through laparoscopy surgery services,” she says. “It’s better to be safe than sorry!”

Crest Hill man loses 185 pounds after gastric sleeve surgery at BMI Surgery at Silver Cross

Crest Hill native Michael Washlow admits bouncing between seven different foster homes as a child had a lot to do with his weight gain over the years. Although he was adopted into a loving family at age 11, his weight struggles continued.

Washlow tried nearly every diet he could think of. Then one day his mom found BMI Surgery at Silver Cross online. He signed up for one of the weekly informational meetings in early 2017.
“It’s a totally different lifestyle, but I knew it would be worth it in the end,” he said.
In July that year, Washlow had laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery, which changes the shape of the stomach, creating a “sleeve” to allow food to go from the sleeve to the intestine, helping to increase feelings of fullness.
Before surgery, Washlow weighed 415 pounds. With diet restrictions, the weight came off faster at the beginning; the real challenge was motivating himself to work out.
“I paid for a personal trainer for a while,” he said.
Now, at 239 pounds,“I’m able to crouch and bend my knees and put weight on them,” Washlow said. “I can run. I can also tie my shoes and breathe at the same time. I would go to BMI Surgery again in a heartbeat.”
Though he’s not at his goal weight just yet, Washlow remains focused on staying healthy and active.
“Now that I’m putting on muscle, my goal weight is changing. I’m more fit and active than I’ve ever been in my life.” In fact, Washlow’s amazing transformation will be featured in an upcoming issue of Men’s Health magazine.
