Study finds weight-loss surgery safe for obese teens

Obesity has been the problem of people of almost all the age groups, which certainly include the teenagers. Of this age group, only 5 percent were seen with some major repercussions like joint pain, issues in kidneys and blood pressure. This was only for the cases of highly morbid teenagers having the BMI of 50 and more. The experts blamed their excessive weight, which was three times than expected BMI. Similarly, the teenagers having the gastric bypass banding procedure too had effective result for the teenagers in terms of weight loss. The surgeons were able to create an effective pouch inside their stomach, which in turn helped in giving effective weight loss.

No deaths after the weight loss surgery

The same study also indicated that there were no deaths being reported after the weight loss surgery. A number of complications would require additional surgery and options like blood transfusion or internal organ injury, which was hardly witnessed in the teens. The study indicated that only 5 percent of the teens actually needed the advance level surgery to get rid of the extra weight. The same set of weight loss surgical procedures also indicated witnessed certain minor complications, which came in the form of bleeding and dehydration, which put an impact over only 15 % of the teenaged patients. Though the same study expressed its concern for the teenagers for obesity surgery, however, it has reported a minimal amount of complications, which clearly indicate that the weight loss surgery for teenagers are more effective and result oriented.

The parents who are keen to opt for obesity surgery for their teens are supposed to weigh the pros and cons of the procedure opted to get rid of the extra weight. If you compare the weight loss surgery opted by adults to the teens, the latter seems to be a rare case. Yes the fact of the matter is, any teenager opting for weight loss surgery to treat his or her morbid obesity is a rare phenomenon. However, of late, due to drastic lifestyle changes, there is an increase in this trend. As per the recent report published in the popular Journal of American College of Surgeons, an estimate suggests that there will be 75 percent of increase in the coming years for the weight loss surgeries among the teenagers. Regardless of the trend seen in the number of surgeries for weight loss among the teens, the fact remains the same, these are effective for this age group as well unlike the adult obese patients.
